Tailor my résumé to a job post
Tailor an existing résumé to a specific job posting without inventing anything. Maps the posting's requirements to real evidence, rewrites bullets to match, flags gaps honestly, and suggests a summary line. Use when the user shares a résumé plus a job post and asks to tailor, target, or improve it for that role.
Self-tested · demo data
What "self-tested" means: our own AI agent ran this skill against the fictional demo files and we published its real output, failures included. The same agent also wrote the skill and the demo data, so this is not an independent review. Check results yourself before you rely on them.
Drop the folder into your agent's skills directory (e.g. ~/.agents/skills/ or ~/.claude/skills/), or paste SKILL.md into any chat assistant. Demo files included:
demo/job-post.mddemo/resume.md
Test record
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Status | Self-tested (demo data) |
| Version / date | v1.1 re-test: 2026-10-14 (v1.0 first test: 2026-10-13) |
| Model / agent | Grok Bot (the same agent that wrote the skill and the demo data, so this is not an independent test) |
| Input | demo/resume.md (fictional "Morgan Lee") + demo/job-post.md (fictional Operations Coordinator role) |
| Method | Grok Bot re-ran SKILL.md v1.1 from scratch on the unchanged demo files, including the new source-line audit step. |
What changed in v1.1
- Failure fixed: v1.0 added an unsupported phrase ("keeping communication clear and calm") and generalized "the point-of-sale system" to plural "systems."
- Fix: a new required step 6, source-line audit: every new phrase in the bullets and summary must point to a résumé line, or be deleted or bracketed. Soft-skill adjectives count as new claims. Keep the résumé's grammatical number. Write durations as written ("since 2022"), not as computed totals.
v1.1 result (real output)
Match table (unchanged from v1.0: 4 Strong must-haves, 1 Partial, Spanish and process improvement Strong, scheduling software a Gap).
Rewritten bullets (old → new) 1. "Built the weekly staff schedule in a spreadsheet" → "Built the weekly schedule for a 14-person team across two shifts in a spreadsheet" 2. "Handled inventory counts and ordering for footwear department" → "Handled inventory counts and ordering for the footwear department [add metric?]" 3. "Coordinated deliveries with 3 local vendors" → "Coordinated deliveries with 3 local vendors" (already matches the posting's "vendor coordination"; left as is) 4. "Cut food waste by 18% by changing the prep checklist" → "Process improvement: changed the prep checklist, cutting food waste by 18%" 5. "Resolved customer complaints and processed returns" → "Resolved customer complaints and processed returns [add metric?]" 6. "Trained new hires on the point-of-sale system" → "Trained new hires on the point-of-sale system" (unchanged)
Summary: Assistant store manager and former café shift lead who has built weekly schedules for a 14-person, two-shift team since 2022, coordinated deliveries with local vendors, and handled inventory ordering. Bilingual English/Spanish; cut food waste 18% by changing a prep checklist.
Source-line audit | New phrase | Source line in résumé | |---|---| | "14-person team across two shifts" | "Supervise a team of 14 sales associates across two shifts" | | "in a spreadsheet" | "Built the weekly staff schedule in a spreadsheet" | | "Process improvement" | Label only, matching the posting's keyword; the fact is "Cut food waste by 18% by changing the prep checklist" | | "Assistant store manager and former café shift lead" | Job titles: Assistant Store Manager (2022–present), Shift Lead (2019–2022) | | "since 2022" | "2022–present" | | "coordinated deliveries with local vendors" | "Coordinated deliveries with 3 local vendors" | | "Bilingual English/Spanish" | Skills line | | Removed in this run: "using Excel/Google Sheets" (v1.0 bullet 1) | No source. The résumé lists Excel and Google Sheets as skills but doesn't say which one the schedule used | | Removed in this run: "and timing" (v1.0 bullet 3) | No source | | Removed in this run: "Organized" (v1.0 summary) | No source (soft-skill adjective) | | Removed in this run: "4 years" (v1.0 summary) | A computed figure; replaced by "since 2022" |
Result: 0 unsourced phrases in the v1.1 output. The audit also caught three more embellishments v1.0 had missed ("Excel/Google Sheets" on the schedule, "and timing", "Organized") and removed them.
Gaps: scheduling software (Jobber/ServiceTitan): none, so address it in the cover letter and don't list it. Customer communication has no metric. Missing keywords: "field teams", "Jobber", "ServiceTitan", "operations".
Remaining known failures / limits
- Fewer keywords. The stricter audit means bullets echo the posting less (e.g. "Excel/Google Sheets" no longer appears on the scheduling bullet). Users should add it back only if it's true.
- Bullet 1 combines two résumé lines (the team size and the schedule). Both are sourced, but it implies the schedule covered the full 14-person team, which is likely but not stated. Users should confirm.
- Not tested with PDF/DOCX résumés.
- Self-tested only: the same agent wrote the skill, the demo data, and ran the test.
History
- v1.0 (2026-10-13): found 2 problems: an invented soft-skill phrase in bullet 5, and singular "system" made plural in bullet 6. Both are fixed in v1.1.

# Tailor my résumé to a job post
## Inputs
The current résumé (text) and the full job posting (text).
## Steps
1. Pull the posting's top **6–8 requirements**, in its own words. Mark each as must-have or preferred.
2. Build a **match table**: requirement → the exact résumé evidence → Strong / Partial / Gap.
3. Rewrite up to 6 bullets so they lead with the posting's language. **Use only facts already in the résumé.** You may rephrase and reorder. Never add tools, numbers, titles, or results that aren't there.
4. Where a bullet has no number, suggest a `[add metric?]` placeholder rather than inventing one.
5. Write a 2-line summary aimed at the role.
6. **Source-line audit (required).** For every rewritten bullet *and* the summary, make a table: each new phrase → the résumé line it comes from. Delete or bracket any phrase with no source line, including soft-skill adjectives ("organized", "calm", "excellent"). Keep the résumé's own grammatical number and scope ("the system" stays singular). Express durations as written in the résumé ("since 2022"), not as computed totals.
7. List the **gaps** honestly, with a suggestion for each: address it in a cover letter, take a short course, or leave it off.
8. List the keywords from the posting that still don't appear anywhere.
## Output format
Match table → rewritten bullets (old → new) → summary → source-line audit → gaps → missing keywords.
## Guardrails
- **Zero fabrication.** If you're unsure whether something is in the résumé, it isn't.
- Don't add personal details (age, photo, marital status).
- The user reviews and sends. Don't apply on their behalf.
